End Of An Era? Lyon’s Financial Crisis Sparks Ligue 2 Threat
French football giants Olympique Lyonnais (Lyon) face the grim prospect of relegation to Ligue 2 at the end of the season unless they urgently address their financial struggles. The club has also been slapped with a transfer ban, prohibiting…CONTINUE READING…
any new signings during the January transfer window.
Lyon’s financial woes stem from the mounting debts of owner John Textor, who also co-owns Crystal Palace in the English Premier League and has a significant stake in Brazil’s Botafogo. Textor’s Eagle Football Group recently disclosed a staggering debt of £422 million, raising serious concerns about the group’s ability to sustain its football operations.
The DNGC (Direction Nationale du Contrôle de Gestion), France’s regulatory body for professional football, issued the provisional relegation notice alongside increased scrutiny of Lyon’s payroll and financial practices.
Once a dominant force in French football with seven league titles, Lyon now finds itself struggling to stay afloat. The club currently holds fifth place in Ligue 1 and ninth in the Europa League standings, but their legacy is at risk.
To avert disaster, Lyon may be forced to sell key players during the January transfer window to stabilize its finances. Reports suggest Textor might also consider selling his stake in Crystal Palace or liquidating assets from Botafogo to ease the burden.
The club’s celebrated history is now overshadowed by a race against time to restore financial stability and retain their Ligue 1 status.
