Former NSA Gusau Highlights Nigeria’s Security Challenges: ‘A Difficult Country To Secure
Former National Security Adviser, General Aliyu Gusau (rtd), has voiced the opinion that securing Nigeria poses a significant challenge, citing its estimated population of 223.8 million and diverse terrain spanning 923,768 square kilometers…..CONTINUE REDING
During the launch of the Askarawa security outfit by the Zamfara State government to bolster security efforts, the retired general emphasized that “expecting a single police force to patrol and control such a large and complex nation effectively is a very tall order indeed.”
Gusau, also a former Minister of Defence, urged Nigerians to reconsider their security strategy in the nation’s best interest. He expressed concern over the daily loss of innocent lives, citing prevalent issues such as terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, armed robbery, organized crime, drug trafficking, human trafficking, cultism, and other vices across Nigeria.
Highlighting the impunity with which perpetrators operate, Gusau noted that increased military deployment to hotspots has not yielded the intended outcomes. Commending the initiative by the Zamfara State Government, he stated that it would augment the efforts of the regular police force.
To ensure its success, Gusau suggested directing strategic attention to establishing suitable support structures. He underscored the necessity for enhanced inter-agency collaboration and cooperation among the government, private sector, and citizens to effectively address Nigeria’s security challenges.
