Just In: Stakeholders-Advocate Police Reform For Enhanced-Efficiency And Public Trust (Details)

The National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, and other key stakeholders have underscored the imperative of reforming the police force to enhance efficiency and professionalism through civilian oversight.

At a two-day retreat themed “Civilian Oversight in Nigeria Police Affairs,” held at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Ibadan, Oyo State, the stakeholders emphasized the need for comprehensive reforms to address the challenges facing law enforcement in Nigeria.

Mallam Ribadu, represented by AIG Emmanuel Effiom (rtd), emphasized the necessity of reappraisal, retooling, and redefining the Nigeria Police Force to ensure professional service delivery in line with global best practices. He expressed optimism that the retreat, organized by the Police Service Commission (PSC) in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and other partners, would yield tangible outcomes.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, represented by Senator Amos Yohana, highlighted the crucial role of civilian oversight in promoting transparency, accountability, and public trust in law enforcement institutions. He identified various challenges facing the police and emphasized the need for reforms to ensure adherence to the law and respect for citizens’ rights. Akpabio stressed the importance of strengthening oversight organizations such as the Police Service Commission (PSC) and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to enhance their effectiveness.

Governor Seyi Makinde, represented by his deputy, underscored the negative perception of the police among the public and urged participants to examine constitutional provisions to guide civilian oversight initiatives. He called for increased support from the federal government to complement state efforts in supporting the police force.

UNDP Programme Specialist, Rule of Law and Human Rights Office, Napoleon Enayaba, emphasized the significance of the retreat in reflecting on past progress and exploring strategies to sustain and strengthen police reforms. He stressed the importance of inclusiveness, diversity, and accountability within the police force, highlighting the need for adherence to professional standards and respect for human rights.

As stakeholders converge to deliberate on effective accountability and police oversight, the retreat signals a critical step towards enhancing public safety, trust, and driving transformation within the Nigerian Police Service in alignment with global best practices.
