Kano Assembly Pulls Back Impeachment Notice Against Ex-Deputy Gov Abdulsalam
According to Ireporter Online, the Kano State House of Assembly has officially withdrawn its impeachment notice against former Deputy Governor Aminu Abdulsalam following his voluntary resignation from office. The decision was made during Tuesday’s plenary session, effectively ending the impeachment process against the former deputy governor.
The motion to withdraw the notice was moved by Majority Leader Lawan Hussaini Chediyar Yangurasa and presided over by Speaker Jibril Isma’il. The Speaker noted that pursuing impeachment after Abdulsalam’s resignation would be unnecessary.
After the session, Hussaini told journalists that all charges against Abdulsalam had been discontinued. “We have withdrawn all charges against him, and the matter has been laid to rest. Our role is limited to removing an official if found guilty. Since he has voluntarily resigned, how can we continue?” he said, adding, “We are not the EFCC or ICPC; our mandate has been fulfilled.”
The impeachment proceedings had been initiated on March 5, 2026, over allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and breach of public trust, stemming from a petition by the state executive accusing Abdulsalam of irregularities during his tenure as Commissioner for Local Government Affairs from 2023 to 2024. The initial notice was issued in line with Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
With the formal withdrawal of the impeachment notice, the Kano Assembly has effectively closed the chapter on the controversy surrounding Abdulsalam’s exit from office.
