The Police headquarters made it clear that engaging in such activities within the country would result in facing the full force of the law.
The declaration comes in response to recent trends on social media, prompting the Nigeria Police Force to address the legal dimensions surrounding unnatural offences and same-sex marriage.
The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, underscored that the Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act of 2014 criminalizes the solemnization, operation, and public display of same-sex marriages.
The statement released by the Police Force highlighted the legal aspects related to unnatural offences and same-sex marriage under the Nigerian Criminal Code Act, which is applicable in Southern states, as well as Section 284 of the Nigerian Penal Code, which is applicable in the Northern part of the country.
Sections 214 to 217 of the Criminal Code specifically criminalize acts considered unnatural, outlining legal consequences for those found guilty. The Police Force emphasized the importance of understanding and adhering to these laws, warning that any violation would be met with due legal processes.
As the pronouncement echoes across the country, the statement serves as a reminder of the legal landscape regarding same-sex marriage in Nigeria, reinforcing the authorities’ commitment to upholding existing laws and regulations.
The declaration sets the stage for potential legal actions against individuals engaging in same-sex marriages, signaling a renewed focus on enforcing established legal boundaries in the country.
