Minister Momoh Commends Digital Education Initiative , Hails NDDC Partnership With First Lady In Empowering Niger Delta Students
The Federal Government has taken a significant step towards educational advancement and youth empowerment in the Niger Delta region with the launch of the U-Lesson tablet distribution initiative, a partnership between the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI). At the flag-off ceremony, 45,000 digital learning tablets were provided to students across the nine states of the Niger Delta, marking a major milestone in fostering digital literacy and inclusive education in Nigeria.
The Honourable Minister of Regional Development, Engr. Abubakar Momoh, expressed high optimism about the program’s potential to transform the educational landscape for young Nigerians, especially in underserved communities.
Momoh praised the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her commitment to equitable education, noting that this effort aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 4, which emphasizes inclusive and lifelong learning opportunities. He further emphasized that the initiative is part of a broader federal agenda to equip the next generation with the skills needed for global competitiveness, adding that empowering Niger Delta students with digital resources would help bridge educational gaps in the region.
The First Lady, in her remarks, underscored the critical importance of these devices in providing students with access to vast educational resources, reinforcing their classroom learning and fostering a culture of academic excellence. Highlighting the tablets’ alignment with the Nigerian educational curriculum, she emphasized that the U-Lesson software’s offline functionality and long battery life would enable students to learn efficiently without constant internet access. She added that this program is in harmony with the Federal Government’s Digital Policy, aiming to build a robust digital ecosystem that fosters innovation, skill development, and sustainable growth.
NDDC’s Managing Director, Chief Samuel Ogbuku, Ph.D., and the Commission’s Board Chairman also conveyed their dedication to ensuring that the tablets reach schools where they will have the greatest impact. The Commission is prioritizing functional schools across the Niger Delta and collaborating with state education ministries to distribute the resources equitably. In addition, NDDC has employed a consultant to train teachers on effective usage of the U-Lesson tablets, ensuring that the devices can deliver maximum educational benefits and support the students’ academic journeys.
With the support of RHI and the NDDC, the digital tablets are set to enhance student engagement and serve as powerful educational tools for the region. The First Lady, addressing students at the event, encouraged them to embrace this opportunity to unlock their potential and aim for excellence, noting that education remains the key to a prosperous future.
The U-Lesson tablet initiative demonstrates the government’s dedication to sustainable development in the Niger Delta, as well as its commitment to creating inclusive pathways for quality education and lifelong learning for Nigerian youth.
