NCC Issues Warning – SIMs Without NIN Linkage To Be Deactivated By Month-End
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has issued a stern warning, stating that SIM cards not linked to National Identity Numbers (NIN) will face deactivation by the end of February….Read More
In a meeting with journalists on Tuesday, Feb. 6, NCC Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Aminu Maida, emphasized the impending action, declaring that “By the end of this month, SIMs without NIN will no longer work.”
The directive to link SIM cards with NINs was introduced in December 2020, aimed at bolstering efforts to combat criminal activities such as banditry and terrorism. Despite multiple deadline extensions, a significant number of phone lines remain unlinked.
Addressing concerns over loopholes in the system, Mr. Maida highlighted the challenge posed by pre-registered or illegally registered SIM cards. He underscored the commission’s commitment to holding telecom service providers accountable for delivering quality services to consumers.
Emphasizing a data-driven approach, Mr. Maida outlined the commission’s focus on enhancing industry standards and consumer satisfaction. He emphasized the importance of protecting consumer interests while ensuring compliance among licensees.
As the deadline for SIM-NIN linkage approaches, the NCC remains steadfast in its mission to safeguard consumer rights, regulate the telecom industry, and foster compliance among service providers.
