New Video Showing Prigozhin Emerge

A newly released video from a pro-Wagner private military company (PMC) Telegram channel called Grey Zone appears to show Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin, who was previously believed to be deceased, claiming to be in Africa shortly before his death.

In the video, Prigozhin seems untroubled about his safety and well-being and states that he is in Africa and doing fine. The exact date and location of the video remain unclear.

Prigozhin’s words suggest that the video may have been recorded on the weekend of August 19, and it bears a resemblance to a previous video from August 21 where he was said to be in Africa. However, CNN has not been able to independently verify the locations or dates of either video.

Prigozhin tragically died in a plane crash on August 23, along with nine other passengers, while en route to St. Petersburg.

The crash occurred two months after Prigozhin’s reported attempted mutiny against Russia’s military leadership. While the cause of the crash remains unclear, US and Western intelligence officials have expressed beliefs that it may have been a deliberate act.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Russia is considering the possibility of “deliberate” action in its investigation of the plane crash, but it will not involve international investigators. He also refuted claims that the Kremlin might have been involved in the crash, labeling such speculation as an “absolute lie” and stating that no evidence has been presented to link the Kremlin or Russian security services to the incident.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, commenting on the crash for the first time, described Prigozhin as “talented” but acknowledged his “serious mistakes in life.” The two had known each other since the early 1990s when they both rose in influence after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Russia is now taking steps to control groups like Wagner, with Putin signing a decree requiring paramilitary fighters to swear an oath to the state.
