Nigerian Government Asserts Strong-Evidence Against Binance In Prosecution (Details)
Ongoing attention to the trial of the controversial online platform Binance and one of its top executives accused of illicit cryptocurrency trading in Nigeria, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, emphasized the adherence to due process according to Nigerian law throughout the proceedings.
“Every step of the way, we’ve followed due process, and the prosecution is confident in their case based on gathered facts and evidence,” Idris stated. “Binance will have the opportunity to present its defense in court against these serious allegations of financial crimes against Nigeria. The next hearing is scheduled for June 20, 2024.”
The minister clarified that Binance, as the defendant, has been afforded consular access and treated in accordance with normal diplomatic protocols and legal principles, noting that the judge denied bail due to flight risk following the disappearance of a co-accused, who is now subject to an Interpol warrant.
It’s worth noting that Binance recorded a turnover of over US$20 billion in Nigeria in 2023 alone, surpassing the federal budget for health and education, contributing to currency speculation and exacerbating the cost-of-living crisis.
Moreover, Binance is not registered in Nigeria and has not paid taxes within the Nigerian jurisdiction, operating without oversight or regulatory checks to detect criminal activities.
Idris highlighted Binance’s troubled history, citing instances where its representatives faced imprisonment, fines, sanctions, and bans in North America, Europe, and Asia. For instance, Changpeng Zhao, the billionaire co-founder and former CEO of Binance, is serving a four-month prison sentence in the United States for money laundering.
Additionally, Binance openly admitted to facilitating terrorism, corruption, sanctions violations, and aiding pedophile rings. Law enforcement agencies suspect Binance’s Nigerian operations are part of a broader international pattern, leaving it to the courts, both domestically and internationally, to hold the company and its executives accountable.
