Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has refuted claims of a meeting with President Bola Tinubu in Abeokuta on Thursday.

A video circulating on social media alleged that Obasanjo and Tinubu met at the 80th birthday celebration of the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, where they supposedly promised support in exchange for a job offer.

Obasanjo dismissed the video as fabricated, incoherent, and distasteful. In a statement from his media aide, Kehinde Akinyemi, Obasanjo clarified that the banter took place during Tinubu’s visit to his home in Abeokuta in 2022, prior to the 2023 general elections.

Obasanjo emphasized that he hadn’t seen Bola Tinubu since that visit and clarified that he attended the church service, not the reception for the Alake’s 80th birthday.

The statement clarified that during Tinubu’s visit last year, they engaged in light-hearted banter about Obasanjo playing his favorite traditional game (ayo) at an unusual time. When Tinubu jokingly suggested a job offer, Obasanjo playfully responded, “when I don’t have job. If you are ready to give me job, I am ready to do it.”

This, according to Akinyemi, contradicts the narrative presented in the viral video.

Obasanjo insisted that he is not actively seeking employment and is not collaborating with anyone, contrary to the false information being circulated. He advised those looking for people to work with Tinubu to consider individuals other than himself.
