Retired Teacher Sentenced To Death In Saudi Arabia After Tweeting Criticism

A retired teacher in Saudi Arabia has been sentenced to death for online comments, according to his brother and Human Rights Watch.

Muhammad al-Ghamdi, a 54-year-old retired Saudi teacher, was convicted after posting five tweets criticizing corruption and human rights violations.

He was arrested last year and had limited access to a lawyer before his conviction in July.

He was sentenced under various articles of Saudi Arabia’s counterterrorism law, including those related to criticizing the king or crown prince and supporting a terrorist ideology.

Saudi Arabia has faced criticism for its escalating crackdown on free speech and human rights, with dozens of executions reported in recent years.
