Stella tirelessly advocated for his freedom when he was imprisoned under General Sani Abacha’s regime, accused of involvement in a coup. He was ultimately released by the administration of AbdulSalam Abubakar after Abacha’s death, a turning point that paved the way for his presidency.

Obasanjo, now 87, praised Stella’s dedication, noting, “My late wife went everywhere to ensure I came out of prison alive. She traveled to the Vatican City, France, and other parts of the world. I owe my release to her.” He added, “No honor could ever be too much for her role.”

He expressed gratitude for the hospital named in her memory, stating, “I had a partner who contributed immensely to my achievements in public life.”

Obasanjo also commended Governor Godwin Obaseki for his work on the hospital project, saying, “This hospital assures first-class treatment, and with this, I can say the governor has started and is finishing well in office.”
