Umahi Reveals The Federal Roads That Will Be Redesigned As Concrete

The Federal Government has announced its intention to phase out conventional asphalt roads in favor of concrete roads nationwide.

This decision was revealed by the Minister of Works, David Umahi, who emphasized that the shift to concrete roads would enhance their durability, significantly extend their lifespan, and reduce the need for frequent maintenance and repairs.

Minister Umahi, during an inspection of the Akure-Ado Ekiti road construction project in Ondo State, stated that concrete roads could have a remarkable lifespan of 50 years, surpassing the average 15-year lifespan of asphalt roads.

He also explained that ongoing road projects across the country, which are less than 20 percent complete, including the Akure-Ado Ekiti road, would be redesigned to feature concrete pavements.

Umahi highlighted the economic benefits of concrete technology, as it reduces the pressure on the Nigerian Naira, which is currently strained due to the importation of bitumen. He stressed the importance of reviewing existing projects awarded three years ago, as this would help ensure they are appropriately funded and completed.

Furthermore, the Minister emphasized that concrete roads are more resistant to extreme temperature variations, making them a suitable choice for Nigeria’s diverse climate, and require less maintenance overall.
