President Tinubu Said Nigeria Is Planning To Abolish Naira And Start Using Dollars? – Fact Emerge As Video Goes Viral
In 2022, the Nigerian naira underwent a redesign aimed at combating counterfeiting and terrorism, resulting in a currency shortage crisis in February 2023. Consequently, the naira experienced a significant depreciation in the international market. In an attempt to stabilize it, President Bola Tinubu implemented a unified exchange rate.
More recently, the country has faced a worsening foreign exchange crisis as the value of the naira continues to decline.
Against this backdrop, a video is circulating on Facebook in Nigeria with the claim that Tinubu intends to transition Nigeria’s currency to dollars.
The video is captioned: “Nigeria planning to abolish the Naira and start using dollars. By President Tinubu. I am just a Messenger, don’t kill the Messenger.”

The same claim appeared on Facebook here, here, and here.
However, upon examination, the video does not feature Tinubu articulating his intentions to switch the national currency to dollars.
While the video does involve Arise News presenter Ojy Okpe, the latter portion where the president purportedly declares the country’s shift from the naira to the dollar seems to have been digitally manipulated. The lip movements of both the anchor and the president are noticeably out of sync in the video.
Additionally, Arise News issued an official disclaimer on its X handle (formerly Twitter), affirming that the video is the work of “Fake News peddlers.” Alongside this statement is a screenshot from the video marked with the label “FAKE.”
The disclaimer reads: “ARISE News totally dissociates itself from a DEEP FAKE VIDEO making the rounds on social media mimicking the What’s Trending segment’s anchor Ojy Okpe”.
Furthermore, our investigation revealed that there have been no reports from reputable news organizations, both domestic and international, regarding any such statement from the president. If such a declaration were authentic, it would have undoubtedly garnered widespread media attention.
