Oil marketers suggest that incorporating ethanol into Premium Motor Spirit could potentially reduce the petrol price nationwide to N49 per litre, especially in light of the ongoing scarcity in certain regions of the country.

These findings were uncovered by Saturday PUNCH during the BusinessDay/Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria Policy Intervention Series on Alternative Fuel held in Lagos.

Marketers argue that blending ethanol with petrol offers substantial cost savings for both the Federal Government and consumers. Clement Isong, the Executive Secretary of MOMAN, conveyed this information to The PUNCH during the workshop.

“We all know that everyone is currently complaining of the high price of petrol, however, blending ethanol with petrol is one of the ways to bring down prices by up to N49 per litre. This practice can also support local farming and agro-processing industries, particularly using abundant resources like cassava.”

Ethanol is a clear, volatile, flammable liquid characterized by its distinctive odor and chemical formula C2H5OH. While it constitutes the primary form of alcohol in beverages, pure ethanol is unsuitable for human consumption. In most fuel, ethanol is present, typically at a concentration of 10 percent. This inclusion serves to supply oxygen to the fuel and mitigate emissions. Additionally, ethanol raises the octane rating in fuel, contributing to the overall well-being of vehicles.
