Afenifere Blames Buhari And Emefiele For Nigeria’s Economic Crisis
Afenifere, the influential Yoruba socio-political group, has pointed fingers at former President Muhammadu Buhari and former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, for the economic challenges currently plaguing Nigerians…..READ ALSO See Three Suspects Accused Of Forging Ex-President Buhari’s Signature In $6.2 Million Scam
In a scathing statement released on Friday, signed by its Publicity and Organizing Secretaries, Jare Ajayi and Kole Omololu, respectively, Afenifere laid bare its grievances against the previous administration’s economic policies.
The group accused Buhari’s government of implementing detrimental economic strategies that have exacerbated the country’s hardships, failing to manage the economy effectively.
Afenifere lamented the absence of subsidies in the last budget, a decision it claims forced President Bola Tinubu to swiftly remove fuel subsidies, further burdening citizens.
Furthermore, Afenifere lambasted Buhari for purportedly neglecting critical security challenges such as kidnapping, banditry, and terrorism during his tenure.
Recalling a probe panel’s findings, the group highlighted allegations against the former CBN governor, accusing Emefiele of unauthorized money printing amounting to N22.7 trillion through Ways and Means. This alleged fiscal misconduct occurred while the government resorted to borrowing to meet basic financial obligations.
The statement emphasized the lack of consequences for Emefiele’s actions under Buhari’s leadership, suggesting a culture of impunity within the administration.
However, Afenifere expressed optimism following the inauguration of President Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu, noting his swift action to address the subsidy regime upon assuming office in May 2023. Tinubu’s decisive move to end subsidies aligns with his administration’s commitment to fiscal responsibility, the statement concluded.
Afenifere’s stance underscores growing discontentment with the economic policies of the previous administration and highlights expectations for effective governance under the new leadership.
