Behind Closed Doors Generals Mobilize For Chief Of Army Staff Lagbaja’s Position Amid Illness
The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, is reportedly facing an undisclosed health issue, leading to intense competition among senior military officers for his position. According to sources, Lagbaja’s health challenges have raised concerns about his future in the role.…CONTINUE READING
Lagbaja, appointed by President Bola Tinubu in June 2023, is the 27th Chief of Army Staff, succeeding Faruk Yahaya. He holds a critical position within the Nigerian military hierarchy, reporting directly to the Chief of Defence Staff, who answers to the Defence Minister and the President.
Recent reports indicate that family members have taken Lagbaja abroad for medical treatment, with insiders describing his condition as “strange.”
“One source revealed, ‘The Chief of Army Staff has been absent for several days. He hasn’t attended any military events in the past three weeks and was recently moved overseas for treatment due to his serious illness.’
Another Major expressed concern, noting, ‘As military personnel, we are trained to be observant. I noticed his absence at the October 1 Independence Day parade and was informed he was out of the country. This is unusual for him.’
The promotion list for soldiers, which was finalized weeks ago, remains unsigned due to Lagbaja’s absence, causing discontent among those awaiting promotion.
Multiple sources have reported that Lagbaja’s health has significantly deteriorated, leaving him bedridden and unable to engage in conversations.
“There are indications that he may have been considering resignation due to his health issues before this latest downturn,” said one source.
As concerns grow over Lagbaja’s condition, lobbying among senior military officers for the position of Chief of Army Staff has intensified. Major Generals are reportedly discreetly seeking the support of influential figures, including politicians and military leaders, to secure the role.
Should Lagbaja fail to recover from his unusual ailment, the incoming Chief of Army Staff will face considerable challenges. With a wealth of experience, including previous command roles, Lagbaja’s departure would mark a significant change for the Nigerian Army.
“Given the severity of his illness, it’s unlikely any President would allow him to retain his position, even upon discharge from the hospital,” one insider noted, emphasizing the ongoing underground lobbying for his replacement, especially among senior officers from courses 40/41.
Earlier, Army spokesperson Major General Onyema Nwachukwu addressed Lagbaja’s absence, stating he was on leave after a demanding period of service.
“If a Chief of Army Staff takes time off after years of hard work, is that not reasonable? It’s not uncommon for someone in his position to seek medical attention,” he defended.
In a related statement, human rights lawyer and activist Deji Adeyanju expressed wishes for Lagbaja’s speedy recovery, emphasizing the need for empathy toward the military leader and urging the Nigerian Army to ensure a smooth transition of responsibilities during this time.
