Edo 2024: Senator Monday Okpebholo And The Contest He May Face
The upcoming Edo gubernatorial election scheduled for next year is already looming large on the horizon. With a robust field of contenders, the election promises to dominate the airwaves as political dynamics play out in the state.
Interestingly, the Edo All Progressives Congress (APC), currently the opposition party in the state, boasts a notable lineup of serious contenders. This is in contrast to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), which appears to have only a handful of aspirants, owing to the perceived imposition of Governor Obaseki’s preferred candidate.
Another intriguing party in the mix is the Labour Party (LP), which holds the promise of emerging as a strong contender. However, a plethora of relatively unknown and untested aspirants, somewhat affectionately referred to as “new CATs,” seem to populate the LP. While they may leverage the clout of Peter Obi, their voices remain largely unheard in the political discourse.
Behind the scenes, within the LP, there are more than 80 aspirants, but only a select few are positioned as frontrunners. Unsurprisingly, the APC still commands significant attention in the political calculations.
In this context, we turn our attention to Senator Monday Okpebholo and explore the reasons why he might become a significant player in the upcoming contest. Known as “Akpakomiza” among his supporters, Senator Okpebholo is a fresh face in the political arena, representing Edo Central in the National Assembly. While the term “fresh face” might imply a lack of political experience, it simply means that he is a new entrant to the public eye, though active behind the scenes.
This fresh entry into the political landscape may well be a strategic advantage. In an era when conventional politicians are often blamed for the country’s challenges, new faces can offer a breath of fresh air. Okpebholo’s status as a successful businessman and a renowned philanthropist further enhances his appeal across the state.
While some may argue that he should concentrate on his role as a senator, expanding his impact on a larger scale could ultimately benefit his constituents. He is often described as a grassroots politician, known for his humility and deep-rooted connections. His legacy of lifting people out of poverty, empowering constituents, and providing essential start-up capital for residents reinforces people’s faith in his vision for a more prosperous Edo.
Edo has witnessed political turmoil in recent years, which has taken a toll on the state’s peace and stability. The people yearn for a leader with a calm demeanor, one who can respond to criticism without resorting to petty conflicts.
In Senator Monday Okpebholo, Edo may find a candidate who embodies the qualities and vision they are seeking. As the countdown to the 2024 election continues, his entry into the race adds a new dimension to the political landscape, making the contest one to watch closely.
