Idah Peterside, who served as a backup goalkeeper in the national team from 1988 to 2001, emphasized that Jose Peseiro’s defensive tactics provide sufficient grounds for the Portuguese coach’s dismissal.

Peseiro guided the Super Eagles of Nigeria to the 2023 AFCON final in Ivory Coast against the hosts on Sunday, February 11.

Throughout the tournament, the Portuguese coach adopted a defensive approach, placing considerable pressure on the team during most of the seven games played.

While this strategy proved effective in the group stage, where the Super Eagles conceded just one goal in three matches, as well as in the round of 16 and quarter-final stages, it was exposed in the semi-final encounter against South Africa.

Despite goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali’s heroics in saving two spot-kicks during the penalty shootout against South Africa, Peseiro persisted with the defensive approach in the final against Ivory Coast, resulting in a 2-1 defeat for Nigeria.

In an interview with Channels Television on Monday, February 12, Idah Peterside argued that merely reaching the AFCON final should not be sufficient justification for retaining Peseiro as the coach of the Super Eagles.

“You know, a lot of people asked me yesterday, if the coach got to the finals. What do you think? I said, fire him!” he stated.
