New Update: Israel Withdraws Troops From Southern Gaza Strip

The decision to pull back comes following months of intense clashes with Hamas militants, resulting in widespread devastation in the area.
However, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) emphasized that a significant military presence will remain in other parts of the besieged Gaza Strip.
In a statement to AFP, the IDF stated, “The 98th commando division has concluded its mission in Khan Yunis. The division left the Gaza Strip to regroup and prepare for future operations.”
While the withdrawal from Khan Yunis was described as tactical by Israeli newspaper Haaretz, military officials underscored that operational needs will dictate ongoing presence in the region.
According to an army official cited by Haaretz, “The 98th division dismantled Hamas’s Khan Yunis brigades and neutralized thousands of its members. We have fulfilled our objectives in the area.”
The displacement of Palestinians from Khan Yunis may now see a possibility of returning to their homes, following a period of sheltering in the southern city of Rafah.
Nevertheless, the IDF emphasized its commitment to maintaining operational effectiveness in the region. “We will continue to operate there as required by operational necessities,” stated the official to Haaretz.
Khan Yunis, once a densely populated area, has witnessed extensive destruction due to prolonged conflict, with large portions of the city reduced to rubble.
Despite international concerns, the Israeli government remains determined to pursue its military objectives, including potential ground offensives in neighboring Rafah, where a significant number of Gazans have sought refuge.
The conflict in Gaza was triggered by a Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, resulting in the loss of civilian lives. The toll on both sides has been significant, with casualties reported by both Israeli and Palestinian sources.
