The troops, predominantly from Nigerian Company 2 to the United Nations Interim Security Force in Abyei (NIGCOY 2 UNISFA), comprised 15 officers and 142 soldiers.
Addressing the troops at their pre-deployment graduation ceremony, Maj. Gen. Boniface Sinjen, the Chief of Operations at Army Headquarters, emphasized the commitment and capacity of the Armed Forces of Nigeria to deploy quality peacekeepers as part of its contributions to global peace and security.
He highlighted Nigeria’s national defense policy, which prioritizes the security and stability of Africa, particularly the West African sub-region. Sinjen reiterated Nigeria’s dedication to seeking global peace and security through its participation in peace support operations worldwide.
Sinjen noted Nigeria’s extensive peacekeeping history, with over 40 missions and more than 100,000 deployed peacekeepers since its first mission in the Congo in 1960. He underscored the humanitarian impact of Nigerian peacekeepers, aiding distressed nations in restoring peace and fostering development.
The UNISFA mission, established in June 2011, aims to restore peace and stability in Abyei, an administrative town under United Nations control. Its mandate includes protecting civilians, securing the area from unauthorized incursions, and ensuring overall security.
Sinjen commended the professionalism of the troops, highlighting their role in restoring peace and stability in Abyei through their conduct during the mission.
