What Tinubu Must Do For Nigeria To Secure Permanent Seat On UN Security Council

Former aide to ex-Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Laolu Akande, has outlined key diplomatic actions President Bola Tinubu should take to secure a permanent seat for Nigeria on the United Nations Security Council.

In an interview with Channels TV on Monday, Akande stressed the importance of appointing ambassadors to strategic global locations such as New York, Washington, and London. He also urged the president to assign ambassadors to select influential African countries.

Akande’s remarks come after Vice President Kashim Shettima, during the 79th United Nations General Assembly, advocated for Nigeria’s inclusion as a permanent member of the UN Security Council.

Shettima had discussed this with Finland’s President, Alexander Stubb, seeking Finland’s support for Nigeria’s bid.

Akande emphasized that securing key diplomatic positions in influential countries would bolster Nigeria’s chances of obtaining a permanent seat. He noted that focusing on about 10 strategic countries, even within Africa, could significantly strengthen the nation’s position.

However, Akande warned that the process may not be easy, as there would be considerable opposition. “It will be a tough challenge if two new permanent seats are added to the Security Council, and Nigeria doesn’t secure one. There is much work ahead because resistance will be strong,” he said.
