During the Ministerial Roundtable Meeting, themed “Rethinking Malaria Elimination in Nigeria,” held in Abuja, Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, WHO’s regional director for Africa, underscored the significance of accurate and dependable data for accelerating malaria combat efforts within the country.
Dr. Moeti emphasized that Nigeria must intensify its focus on gathering data from local communities to bolster its malaria control endeavors.
Highlighting the necessity for tangible actions fueled by political commitment, Dr. Moeti praised Nigeria’s increased budget allocation towards malaria initiatives as a positive step towards effecting change.
Echoing these sentiments, Prof. Mohammed Ali Pate, the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, outlined the deployment of tools aimed at reducing malaria’s burden within the country. He appealed for partnership support in malaria control and elimination, advocating for local production of anti-malaria drugs.
Prof. Pate stressed the pivotal role of community leaders across various sectors, emphasizing the imperative of a unified approach in tackling malaria.
He emphasized the need for a collective movement involving Nigerian leaders from diverse sectors, urging a shift from idealism to pragmatism. Prof. Pate emphasized the importance of setting ambitious yet realistic goals to drive meaningful progress in the fight against malaria.
