Speaking at the Sectoral Ministerial Briefing on the first anniversary of President Bola Tinubu’s administration in Abuja on Friday, Fagbemi clarified that Kanu’s situation differs significantly from that of Omoyele Sowore, the convener of the #RevolutionNow protest.

“Sowore and Kanu are not the same,” Fagbemi stated. “When it comes to the first one, I didn’t have difficulty to say go, but I have difficulty with the second one.” He further noted that Kanu’s detention is in accordance with the Constitution and reiterated the need to await the court’s decision on the matter.

Sowore, arrested in 2019 for allegedly calling for the forceful takeover of the Buhari administration, saw his case discontinued by the AGF’s office in February.

Fagbemi also reported that the Ministry of Justice has secured 250 convictions for terrorism and other criminal offenses over the past year. This includes 160 convictions for criminal offenses, 87 for terrorism-related cases, and 3 for extremist actions involving child radicalization and violence against women. He highlighted enhanced collaboration between the Ministry and security agencies, focusing on prosecutorial-guided investigations to improve prosecution success rates.

The Ministry’s efforts have also extended to international cooperation on terrorism financing and transnational crimes, resulting in 13 convictions for terrorism financing and the completion of 150 mutual legal assistance requests and 12 extradition requests.

In line with its anti-corruption agenda, the Ministry facilitated the recovery of £2,125,944 in corrupt proceeds from Jersey, earmarked for the Abuja-Kano Road project, and negotiated a $50 million settlement with Glencore International A.G. for activities in Nigeria. The Ministry is also finalizing the Proceeds of Crime Recovery and Management Regulation 2024 to ensure transparent and accountable asset management.

Fagbemi concluded by noting the Ministry’s commitment to enhancing the prosecutorial capabilities of its staff through capacity-building programs on various legal aspects, including terrorism financing and financial crimes.
