NBA Recognizes Muhammadu Sanusi II As Authentic-Emir Of Kano After Ongoing Throne Dispute (Details)
As the tussle for the throne of the Kano emirate continues, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has extended an invitation to the 16th Fulani Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, signaling recognition of him as the legitimate and lawful Emir of Kano.
This development follows support for Sanusi from district heads across Kano’s 44 local government areas, council chairmen, commissioners, and numerous Kano residents and Nigerians. The NBA’s invitation to Sanusi to their ongoing annual conference in Kano further underscores this recognition.
The NBA Annual Conference, held at Amani Event Centre in Kano, featured prominent attendees such as the President of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Benedict Bakwaph Kanyip, NBA President Yakubu Maikyau, SAN, Chief Judge of Kano State, Justice Dije Aboki, and other legal luminaries. Notably, the NBA did not invite Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, recognizing that the previous emir had been dethroned under the new Kano chieftaincy law (repealed) of 2024.
A scheduled federal high court hearing on the emirate case was stalled due to a strike by organized labour unions. Representing Emir Sanusi at the NBA conference, Mahe Bashir Wali (the Walin Kano) welcomed participants and highlighted Kano’s rich cultural and commercial heritage.
Emir Sanusi, through his representative, emphasized the conference theme, ‘Administration of Justice in Nigeria: Challenges and Reforms,’ noting that justice is essential for peace, progress, and development.
Kano State Governor Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by Secretary to the State Government (SSG) Abdullahi Bappa Bichi, challenged NBA members to address conflicting court orders on the emirate tussle, stressing the importance of upholding the rule of law and implementing comprehensive judicial reforms.
Barr O.M. Femi, speaking to journalists about the emirate dispute, affirmed the NBA’s awareness and expressed optimism that the court’s ruling would set a legal precedent, preventing future grievances. He emphasized that the NBA’s recognition of Sanusi at their conference serves as a clear indication of his status as the current Emir of Kano.
“The recognition accorded to His Royal Majesty Muhammadu Sanusi II by the legal practitioners of our land tells it all,” Femi concluded.
