Civil Society Demands CJN’s Resignation Over Alleged Nepotism In Judicial Appointments
The Civil Society Consortium on Judicial Accountability (CSCJA) has issued a strong call for the resignation of the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, citing concerns of nepotism and ethical breaches in the appointment of his biological children to judicial positions……READ ALSO Amidst Hardship, 65 Civil Society Groups Distance Themselves From NLC, TUC Strike
Expressing dissatisfaction with recent appointments, the consortium highlighted the CJN’s decision to appoint his son, Olukayode Ariwoola Junior, as a Judge of the Federal High Court, and his daughter, Oluwakemi Victoria Ariwoola, as a Judge of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
In a protest staged at the Supreme Court premises, members of the group denounced what they perceived as undue advantage conferred upon the CJN’s family through the National Judicial Council (NJC), which he chairs, recommending his children for judicial positions.
Carrying placards with messages decrying nepotism and judicial accountability, the consortium coordinator, Martin Obono, stressed the need for adherence to ethical standards in judicial appointments. He pointed out that the CJN’s actions potentially violate the Code of Conduct for Judicial Officers, particularly regarding nepotism and favouritism.
The protesters urged the CJN to take immediate responsibility for his actions by resigning from his position. They argued that such a step is crucial to restoring public confidence in the judiciary and upholding principles of ethical governance.
Emphasizing the importance of maintaining impartiality and fairness in the judiciary, Obono underscored the need to preserve the integrity of the legal system to ensure equitable treatment for all citizens under the law.
The demand for the CJN’s resignation reflects growing concerns about the erosion of public trust and the perceived abuse of office, emphasizing the critical role of transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s judicial system.
