The anti-graft agency wasted no time in initiating charges against Bello, mere days after his tenure concluded on January 27, 2024. The charges, an amendment to pre-existing accusations involving his nephew and associate, spotlight Bello as a co-defendant, with added counts.

The amended case alleges that Bello, alongside others, diverted a staggering N80.2 billion from Kogi State coffers for personal enrichment. Among the accused, Abdulsalami Hud, Kogi State Government House Cashier, remains at large, while Ali Bello and Dauda Suleiman join Bello as co-defendants.

However, the response from Kogi State Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, was swift and condemning. Fanwo rebuked the EFCC’s actions, particularly denouncing the agency’s portrayal of Bello as ‘at large.’ This depiction, Fanwo argued, falsely insinuated that the former Governor was evading arrest.
