Federal Government Spent N400 Billion Monthly On Fuel Subsidy – Wale Edun Reveals

Edun made this disclosure while highlighting the administration’s efforts to overhaul Nigeria’s economy, shedding light on the significant financial burden posed by the fuel subsidy regime.
President Tinubu’s bold move to eliminate the subsidy, announced during his inauguration in May 2023, marked a pivotal moment in the government’s fiscal policy, aimed at addressing longstanding economic challenges and promoting financial sustainability.
During an interview with Channels TV, Edun underscored the impact of the subsidy removal, emphasizing that it had substantially relieved the government’s financial strain, which had previously amounted to a staggering N400 billion monthly expenditure.
“In terms of the government’s finances, they have been revamped and repaired,” he remarked, alluding to the positive outcomes stemming from the subsidy removal and broader economic reforms spearheaded by the current administration.
Furthermore, Edun lamented the stark wealth disparity plaguing Nigeria, noting that only about 5% of the population possess more than N500,000 in their bank accounts, highlighting the pressing need for equitable distribution of resources and opportunities.
He underscored the government’s commitment to addressing this disparity, emphasizing that ongoing economic reforms are geared towards fostering inclusive growth and narrowing the wealth gap that disproportionately benefits a select few.
As the administration continues its efforts to recalibrate the economy and promote financial inclusivity, Edun’s revelations serve as a stark reminder of the challenges and opportunities inherent in Nigeria’s quest for economic prosperity and social equity.
