Government Shuts Down Popular Market In Lagos
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration has shut down the well-known Idera Market in the Oshodi area of Lagos State due to violations of environmental regulations. The Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), also known as KAI, enforced the closure.
The Corps Marshal, Major Olaniyi Cole (retired), explained that the market was closed as part of a broader effort to maintain cleanliness in all registered markets across the state. During routine inspections, LAGESC officials found unsanitary conditions, improper waste disposal, and large piles of garbage at the market, prompting the shutdown.
Cole expressed concern about the health risks posed by the market’s poor hygiene, noting that such conditions could lead to sickness among vendors and customers. He emphasized the importance of markets adhering to hygienic practices to prevent the spread of diseases.
The closure was also linked to the market’s inability to provide a valid waste collection contract, which contributed to the accumulation of refuse. Cole issued warnings to other markets across the state, stating that any market found violating cleanliness regulations would be closed until they complied fully.
He also reaffirmed the ban on Styrofoam packaging in the state and the ongoing prohibition of street vending and hawking on sidewalks, lay-bys, and medians.
