Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olatunji Disu, revealed that Togo, also known as ‘Togo the Second,’ was a member of the dreaded Iceland cult and engaged in various criminal activities, including illegal oil bunkering, arms trafficking, kidnappings, and robberies.
The police, in collaboration with the C4i Intelligence Unit and Borikiri Police Division, acted on credible intelligence to raid the criminal gang’s camp. Upon encountering the police, the group opened fire, leading to the elimination of the kingpin, John Togo. His criminal career began with cult-related activities in Port Harcourt and evolved into full-fledged kidnapping and sea piracy.
Togo gained notoriety in 2021 for his involvement in sea piracy and kidnappings, sparking the #EndSeaPiracy protests. Despite previous encounters with security forces, Togo continued to elude capture, targeting commercial boats and engaging in shootouts with security forces.
The turning point came when Togo abducted Precious George, the Youth Leader of Ibifara Polo, in May 2023. The police, determined to bring Togo to justice, intensified efforts, ultimately leading to his downfall.
In a separate incident, Commissioner Disu announced the successful rescue of a one-day-old baby and the apprehension of two suspects involved in human trafficking. The diligent officers from the C4i Intelligence Unit conducted a routine stop and search operation along Igwuruta-Eneka Road, intercepting Daniel Destiny Onyegbulem and Uzodinma Eze, also known as Thank-God.
Daniel revealed that he was contacted by a woman named ‘Mama Destiny,’ a pastry vendor, to transport a sack containing the baby. The exchange involved a payment of 10,000 Naira. Further investigations revealed the involvement of Uzodinma, the operator of the commercial motorbike used for the delivery, highlighting the police’s commitment to combating human trafficking and related crimes in the region.
