According to reports, the minister, through his spokesperson, Adeola Adelabu, described the claims as inaccurate and misleading, stressing that no definite timeline was given during his Senate screening on May 6, 2026.

The clarification explained that during the screening exercise, Tegbe only informed lawmakers that efforts to stabilise the national grid would commence within his first 100 days in office, contrary to reports suggesting he promised a complete turnaround within three months.

The statement further noted that comprehensive reforms in the electricity sector, including power generation, transmission and distribution, would require extensive consultations, technical evaluations and long-term implementation before Nigerians begin to experience significant improvements.

It was also gathered that the minister acknowledged that critical challenges such as gas supply shortages, metering gaps, operational inefficiencies and issues affecting investor confidence in the sector may take up to one year before noticeable progress is achieved.

During his appearance before the Senate, Tegbe reportedly assured lawmakers of his commitment to improving electricity supply nationwide, upgrading power infrastructure and enhancing accountability across the electricity value chain.

He also reiterated plans to improve commercial operations within the sector while pursuing reforms aimed at attracting investors and ensuring long-term sustainability.

On the issue of electricity tariffs, the minister-designate reportedly stated that government policies would focus on protecting vulnerable Nigerians while balancing affordability with the need to maintain a viable and investor-friendly power sector.

The statement partly read that Tegbe never promised to fix the national grid within three months, insisting that while work on stabilising the grid would begin within his first 100 days, broader reforms in the power sector would take time because Nigeria’s electricity challenges cannot be solved overnight.
