Will Stevens, the U.S. Consular General to Nigeria, made this announcement during a one-day Panelist Interactive Session for Newsroom and Investigative Journalism in Port Harcourt. The event, organized by Media Awareness and Justice Initiative (MAJI) in collaboration with the American Corner at the University of Port Angeles, focused on unveiling the DataCab Mobile Application.
Stevens emphasized that climate change remains a global concern and is a top priority for President Joe Biden’s administration. He highlighted the U.S. government’s commitment to working with Nigeria to tackle the challenges posed by gas flaring and climate change.
“Climate change is one of the key pillars of President Joe Biden’s administration. We are working hard with Nigeria to ensure that Nigeria continues to make the amazing commitments that they’ve made to combat climate change, reduce flaring and natural gas, and clean up oil spills,” stated Stevens.
He emphasized the collaborative efforts already underway, citing joint initiatives in Port Harcourt with the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) to address oil spills and involve experts from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Stevens highlighted the importance of partnership, stating, “It is about partnership. Climate change is a global problem that impacts every citizen in the world, so we need to work together to fight it.”
Onyekachi Okoro, the Executive Coordinator of MAJI, underscored the significance of empowering journalists with accurate information and data through workshops like the citizens’ science event. The initiative aims to enhance journalists’ capacity to report on environmental issues effectively, utilizing both qualitative and quantitative data.
To facilitate this, MAJI introduced the DataCab Mobile Application, a tool accessible on iOS and Android devices. The app enables journalists to craft stories about environmental incidents in the Niger Delta and report on air quality, contributing to more in-depth and informed reporting for newsrooms.
