Speaking at a symposium hosted by the National Council on Climate Change Secretariat (NCCCS) at the Lekki Conservation Centre in Lagos, Stiell highlighted that proactive climate policies would not only mitigate the devastating impacts of global warming but also unlock immense economic opportunities for Nigeria.

Economic Benefits of Climate Action

According to Stiell, investing in clean energy, sustainable agriculture, and green infrastructure can:

• Create jobs and attract foreign investment
• Enhance Nigeria’s global competitiveness
• Strengthen local economies, particularly for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), which employ 90% of Nigerians

Stiell noted that in 2024 alone, global investment in clean energy and infrastructure reached $2 trillion, and nations that prioritize clean energy will reap the most benefits. He urged Nigeria to leverage its strengths in critical minerals, renewable energy, and domestic manufacturing.

Mangrove Restoration and Climate Resilience

Stiell also highlighted Nigeria’s vast mangrove forests—the largest in Africa and the third largest globally—as a natural defense against climate change. These ecosystems:
