Building Collapse Horror: Wike Seizes Land, Orders Owner’s Arrest

According to reports from Ireporter Online, the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, has ordered the immediate arrest of the owner of a hotel after a multi-story building collapsed last Friday in Jikwoyi, Abuja. Wike also directed that the land be seized and repurposed for public use.

During an inspection of the site on Monday, the minister revealed that the structure had been built without approval from the FCT Department of Development Control. Authorities had previously issued repeated stop-work notices, which the developer ignored, leading to the collapse.

Although no fatalities were reported, several individuals sustained injuries and received medical attention. Wike noted that the incident could have been far more severe if it had occurred during peak hours.

The minister emphasized that the FCT Administration intends to reclaim the land for public projects and warned that all parties involved in the illegal construction would face prosecution. Local community members will be consulted to determine the most suitable public-use project for the site.

Wike urged all developers to adhere strictly to building regulations and secure the necessary approvals before commencing any project, highlighting that proper oversight ensures construction safety and the use of approved materials. He further directed relevant agencies to enhance enforcement measures, including the demolition of unauthorized structures, to prevent similar occurrences.

The minister concluded by reaffirming that the government’s priority is the protection of lives and property, and that violations of construction regulations would attract strict legal action.
